Lozenge Painting

Painting the German WW1 lozenge pattern in 1:144 scale isn't actually all that difficult. The exact geometric shape of the individual lozenges isn't all that important in this small scale, as they really just resolve visually to fairly indistinct blobs anyway.

What is more important is the relative size of the individual blobs of colour, and their spacing relative to each other. Having a more or less accurate starting point makes that a whole lot easier.

To that end, I've made these FDM 3d printed airbrush templates to help me along my way. This is the template for the gold lozenges only, and they'll provide the guide for all the other colours.

I suppose you could make templates for all of the colours, but I think in the end it would be more trouble than it was worth.

I can only really use the templates on the more-or-less flat upper surfaces, but that gives me the visual reference I need to fill in the others as well.

I'd like to try laser-cutting similar templates — they could be cut is a self-adhesive masking tape or something, which would make handling easier, and it would be more feasible to create individual mask shapes for other parts of the model such as the fuselage sides, and even maybe the lower wings.
